Internet & Network Requirements for POS Systems

Minimum internet speed, Wi-Fi band, firewall ports, and router recommendations for reliable POS operation.

Updated 2026-02-11

Internet speed minimums

  • Single terminal: 5 Mbps download, 2 Mbps upload.
  • Multi-terminal restaurant: 25 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up.
  • QSR with KDS + kiosks + online ordering: 50 Mbps down, 25 Mbps up.

Wi-Fi band

Most smart terminals (Dejavoo, PAX, Ingenico) only support 2.4 GHz. Clover handhelds support both bands. Always enable both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz on your router.

Firewall outbound ports

  • 443 (HTTPS)
  • 8443 (transaction host alt)
  • 53 (DNS)
  • 123 (NTP, for terminal clock)

Recommended business routers

  • UniFi Dream Router (under $200, full UniFi management).
  • Cisco Meraki MR36 (with cloud management β€” recommended for chains).
  • Eero Pro 6E mesh (for restaurants with handhelds across 2,000+ sq ft).

Important β€” Done-For-You vs. DIY Installation

Merchant Solutions Corp recommends Done-For-You installation whenever possible. Our team reviews your internet connection, network setup, Wi-Fi coverage, and equipment requirements before deployment to reduce setup issues and downtime.

Merchants who choose Do-It-Yourself installation are responsible for providing a compatible network environment, including internet service, firewall settings, Wi-Fi coverage, and supported accessories. Merchant Solutions Corp cannot guarantee performance or assume responsibility for issues caused by local network configuration, unsupported hardware, or third-party equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will starlink work for my POS?

Yes for single terminals. For full-service restaurants with KDS + handhelds, we recommend a wired fiber/cable connection as a primary with Starlink as backup.

Can I run POS on hotspot only?

For pop-up events and food trucks, yes β€” most smart terminals work fine on 4G hotspots. For brick-and-mortar, no.
