Start with the statement summary
Every processing statement has a Summary page that breaks fees into: discount rate, transaction fees, monthly fees, gateway/PCI fees, and incidentals (chargebacks, retrievals, returns).
Common fees that look "unexpected" but aren't
- PCI Compliance fee β quarterly or annual. Usually $99β$149. Required for all merchants.
- Monthly Minimum fee β if you don't process enough volume, a minimum is charged.
- Statement fee β paper statement, ~$5β$10/mo if not opted to digital.
- Batch fee β $0.05β$0.25 per batch closed.
- Interchange increases β Visa/Mastercard adjust rates twice a year (April + October). Often shows as "Rate Adjustment".
