Closed Account Billing | Why You're Still Being Charged
If you closed your merchant account but still see charges, here's why — and how to stop them.
Updated 2026-02-11
Reasons you might still see charges after closing
- Hardware lease — independent of the merchant account. Lease continues until the term is up or you buy out.
- Software subscription — Clover, billing is per-device-active, not per-merchant-account.
- Final month proration — last batch fees + final PCI + statement fees usually post 30–45 days after closure.
- Chargeback from before closure — disputes can come in up to 540 days after the transaction.
How to stop charges
- Cancel hardware lease directly with the lessor.
- Deactivate POS software in the vendor portal.
- If charges persist >60 days after closure with no open disputes, open a ticket — your account manager will investigate.
